Homebound Ministers take Holy Communion to those who are unable to attend Mass – in their own homes, in assisted living or nursing facilities, or in the hospital. During each visit, the Homebound Minister performs a 10-minute scripted Communion service, administers Holy Communion, and if possible, stays for a brief visit. Volunteers need a valid driver’s license and their own vehicle. It is also important to be able to cheerfully meet with people wherever they are. The time commitment depends on how many recipients the Homebound Minister chooses to serve. The frequency and duration of each visit is decided through a discussion between the Homebound Minister and each recipient. Training is provided. New Homebound Ministers can shadow an experienced minister before they begin making their own visits. Shadowing opportunities are also available to potential volunteers before they make a commitment to serve. The Homebound Ministry team meets three times a year, typically in March, June, and November, for approximately one hour after one of the Masses at St. Peter Claver. Meeting attendance is encouraged but not required.
