Cantors, choirs, and instrumentalists lead the congregation in songs that enhance the worship experience and help the congregation express and reflect on their faith during Mass. Cantors stand in front of the congregation and lead the congregation in song; cantors also sing some solo parts, such as the verses of the Psalm. Choir members stand together as a group, blending their voices to sing in unison or in harmony. It is helpful for cantors and choir members to be able to sing well, especially staying on pitch, and it is helpful, but not required, to be able to read music. Instrumentalists accompany those who are singing and provide background music for quiet reflection. Instrumentalists should have appropriate training.
