Anointing of the Sick: A Sacrament of Healing and Hope

What is the Anointing of the Sick?

The Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, offered to bring spiritual and physical strength during times of illness, suffering, or advanced age. Rooted in the healing ministry of Jesus, this sacrament is a powerful sign of God’s presence, comfort, and peace.

Through the laying on of hands and anointing with sacred oil, the priest prays for the grace of healing, forgiveness, and courage. It is not only for those who are near death, but for anyone facing serious health challenges—physical, emotional, or spiritual.

Why is it Important?

The Anointing of the Sick:

  • Unites the person with the suffering Christ
  • Offers strength, peace, and courage to endure illness
  • May bring physical healing, if it is God’s will
  • Forgives sins if the person is unable to confess
  • Prepares the soul for eternal life, if death is near

This sacrament reminds us that no one suffers alone—Christ is with us, and the Church stands beside us in prayer and love.

When is the Sacrament Offered?

We offer the Anointing of the Sick on a monthly basis during one of our regularly scheduled Masses. Please check the parish bulletin or calendar for upcoming dates.
