6th Grade

health

In health class, we take focus on a different theme each year in middle school. During 6th grade, we look at the term health and all it entails. We discuss the terms self-esteem and self-concept so that we can create a project to express our ideas about ourselves. I enjoy this class because we look at a number of basic health concepts in a way that sparks self-reflection.

7th Grade

no-smoking-and-alcoholIn seventh grade, we explore many legal and illegal drugs so that we are knowledgeable about the reasons people use these substances and the risks involved. This class is important to me because it proactively informs my students in a way they would not get from the media or peers. It is my chance to communicate interesting histories of certain substances while also communicating risks and making sure that the students I teach always make smart, safe choices.

635836568555312831-1063730217_early-puberty-affects-health-young-girls-w654In eighth grade, we discuss adolescent growth and development as well as the creation of life and pregnancy. With all the changes that children this age experience, it is important to have factual information to help understand everything going on in this stage of life. We look at everything from a scientific basis without sensationalizing, and I make it a goal to correct misunderstandings so that students come away from this class confident in their understanding of their bodies. I enjoy teaching this class because it allows me to teach students from a Catholic perspective that they might not get from further education.
